Focused and Fiesty

Ellie Sept 09“Focus…focus…focus.”

That’s all I could hear last evening during our bedtime routine. I turned just to witness my daughter do a somersault. I couldn’t help but smile though. She’s got it.  She can do anything she sets her mind to…and those seem to be the magic words.

Kids say the darndess things it’s true. Any parent knows that and it’s all too often a shame when we don’t record each one however with a witty child or an innocent one, there are many comments that warm our hearts and tickle our brains.

Tomorrow, she will go to school for the first time.  She’s excited…I think.  There’s a little apprehension there I think and as long as she keeps getting her cues from me (and I can keep it together taking my baby to school) all will be well.

My darling daughter has a unique and fiesty personality. She is often determined and many times the sweetest thing alive. She saves worms, pets all animals, talks to the elderly, and tries to dress our dog.  She takes a 100 m. dash to kick a soccer ball with all her might and can charge at her brother and knock him down with alarming gusto. Ellie can entertain herself with stories and dolls and creatures and imaginary friends and then take down the house in fiery defiant screaming our neighbours can attest to.  This is the same kid I found dancing on top of my desk to my new Pink CD last night while I washed dishes.

I thought of her when contemplating a question I was asked through Twitter today from @BeUnreasonable: What are you unreasonably determined to do?  This was my answer: I’m unreasonably determined to be a stellar mom; audacious business woman & wildly loyal, fun friend to many!  I liked it; those words felt good on my skin and gave me a tingle on the inside.  I wondered why that question fired me up.  It’s what I want to model for my kids, it’s what I want people to say about me, it’s how I judge my actions.  A dear friend of mine called me vivacious the other day and I SO LOVED it! As a matter of fact, I keep telling people, almost testing and I’ll get over looking for that validation any time soon. The original thought and compliment has been huge.

Here’s the point.  As much as I’m a role model for my girl, she is for me too.  She cuts through all the adult mumbo-jumbo sometimes and just..is…the vibrant, loving, joyful, beautifully creative creature I adore. And for that I am very grateful. Love you Elle.

I’m thinking that your answer to the ‘unreasonably determined’ question is one that you already have manifested! Dig deeper?
(You know me Jen, I’ll always challenge ya to dig deeper!)

Thanks for the challenge Forrest. I’d hate to think I’ve arrived and quit striving so I’ll give it some more thought. High five to you brotha.
